2009 Update

Enterprise Budget Software Version 2.1 has been updated for the spring/summer budgets. The remaining budget commodities will be updated shortly.

For several commodities, the user is allowed a choice of current year market price estimates instead of defaults based on historical averages. These short-run price projections refer to the 2009 crop year only and are based on futures prices plus other information. Historical defaults can still be a pretty good indication of price levels over the longer term.

Other revisions include - sources in ( ):

  • Where applicable, updated crop default prices and yields based on historical averages through 2007. Historical livestock prices are current through 2007 (NASS, Oklahoma Dept. of Ag., AMS).

  • Updated land tenure rates links (OSU Current Reports 216 and 230).

  • Updated fertilizer/pesticide input prices (NASS, Estes Chemical, local vendors).

  • Updated interest rates, fuel, and wage rate parameters (NASS, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Energy Information Administration).

  • Updated livestock feedstuff prices (NASS, University of Missouri by-product feed listing, local vendors).

  • Added Blackberries to the horticultural budgets.

IMPORTANT - GETTING STARTED!

Due to compatibility issues, we have released two sets of budgets created in Excel 2003 and 2007. Since the tool bar and menu commands are different between these versions, please refer to the following instructions on macro security settings, loading files, and saving customized budgets.

To use a budget, you will need Excel 2003 (or a later version). Open Excel by clicking on the Excel icon. To find out what Excel version you have, if Help is on the menu bar at the top of the screen, click on Help and About Microsoft Office Excel. Otherwise, click the Microsoft Office Button on the upper left-hand corner of the screen, Excel Options, Resources, and About. Note that you may use the Alt key with underlined letter to select an item from the menu.

Macro Settings:

Your computer may have a few settings to adjust before the enterprise budgets will function properly. For the macros to operate, the macro security must be set prior to opening a budget file.

In Excel 2003, the medium setting is recommended. To check your setting:

  1. Click on Tools, Macro, and Security on the menu bar at the top of the page.
  2. You will have four choices: Very High, High, Medium, and Low.

  3. Click on the Medium option button and click OK.

In Excel 2007, click the Microsoft Office Button on the upper left-hand corner of the screen and then Excel Options.

Click Trust Center and then Trust Center Settings...

Click Macro Settings, choose Enable all macros, and click OK.

Load a budget file.

In Excel 2003, select File (from the menu-bar at the top), Open, locate the OSU Budgets (or the directory in which you copied the Enterprise Budgets) and then click on a selected file name. Click Enable Macros to allow the enterprise budget software to operate properly.

Note: You may open a 2003 Excel formatted budget file into Excel 2007. However, if you intend to save it, you will need to save as an Excel 97-2003 Workbook. See the Saving a Customized Budget section for more information.
In Excel 2007, click the Microsoft Office Button on the upper left-hand corner of the screen, Open, locate the OSU Budgets (or the directory in which you copied the Enterprise Budgets) and then click on a selected file name.

Caution: It is not recommended to open a 2007 Excel formatted budget file into Excel 2003 due to incompatibility issues. You will be asked to download a service pack from Microsoft’s website in order to do so.

Saving a Customized Budget

In Excel 2003, to save a customized budget, choose File from the menu bar, then Save As and give the budget a new name so as not to replace the original budget template. Saving the file will preserve all customized information in all sheets for re-use.

In Excel 2007, to save a customized budget, click the Microsoft Office Button on the upper left-hand corner of the screen, Save As, then Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook, and give the budget a new name so as not to replace the original budget template. Saving the file will preserve all customized information in all sheets for re-use.

Warning: In Excel 2007, do not save a 2007 Excel formatted budget file other than the highlighted option shown above. This will allow the software’s macros to perform as intended once reopened in Excel 2007.

Warning: To save a 2003 Excel formatted budget file using Excel 2007, select Excel 97-2003 Workbook. This will allow the software’s macros to perform as intended once reopened in Excel 2003 or 2007.
